A sell sheet is one page that makes a busy buyer want a second conversation. Not a business plan, not a patent, not a 20-slide deck. One page.
I pitched ESPN, the NBA, the NFL, Disney, Nickelodeon and McDonald's before Gopher Sports said yes. The pitches that got read were always the short ones.
What a sell sheet is actually for
Its only job is to get a reply. It is not there to explain everything, protect everything or sell the product outright. A buyer scanning it for eight seconds should understand what it is, who buys it, why it wins and that it is protected.
The seven blocks of a one-page sell sheet
- Headline: the benefit in plain language, not the product name.
- Hero image: the product in use by a real person, not a render.
- One-sentence problem statement your buyer can repeat back.
- Three to five bullet benefits — outcomes, not features.
- Market fit line: who stocks it, which category and price band.
- Proof: awards, patent-pending status, testing, early sales.
- Contact block with your name, email and phone. That is it.
What kills a sell sheet
Requiring an NDA before anyone can look at it. Most companies will not sign one to review an unsolicited pitch — file the provisional patent instead and pitch freely.
Talking about how the idea came to you. Buyers care about their customers, not your origin story.
Listing every possible variation. Pitch one product, one price band, one buyer.
Video beats paper
Twenty seconds of real users enjoying the product does more than any spec sheet. For TeeterToss, footage of an entire gym class playing at once — nobody standing in line — closed more doors than every written argument I made.
The follow-up sequence
- Day 0: email the sell sheet as a PDF plus a video link, subject line naming the benefit and category.
- Day 5: short reply-to-self with one new proof point.
- Day 14: offer a sample or a five-minute call, no attachments.
- Day 45: move on and log them for the next product.
Use the templates instead of starting blank
The Pitch Deck & Sell Sheet Template Kit gives you the layout, the wording and the follow-up emails, and the NDA & IP Protection pack covers you when a manufacturer does need paperwork. Both are included in the $99 complete system, or available individually on the digital property page.
Frequently asked questions
How long should an invention sell sheet be?
One page. If a buyer wants more, they will ask — and that ask is the meeting you wanted.
Should I send an NDA with my sell sheet?
No. Most companies refuse unsolicited NDAs. File a provisional patent first so you can pitch openly with patent-pending protection.
What should I include for proof?
Awards, patent-pending status, user video, safety or durability testing and any early sales numbers. Third-party credibility outperforms adjectives.
