You launched. You searched your business name. Nothing. Then you searched your main keyword and found competitors you've never heard of sitting where you should be.
It's almost never bad luck. It's one of these five.
1. Google hasn't indexed you yet
- Verify the site in Google Search Console — you can't fix what you can't see.
- Submit an XML sitemap and check the Pages report for 'Discovered — currently not indexed'.
- Make sure robots.txt isn't blocking crawlers and no page carries an accidental noindex tag.
2. Your pages are thin and interchangeable
A homepage, an about page and a contact form is a brochure, not a website Google has any reason to rank. Ranking pages answer a specific question completely. If your page could be swapped with a competitor's by changing the logo, it won't rank.
3. You have no topical depth
Google rewards sites that clearly own a subject. One post about patents floating among unrelated pages signals nothing. Fifteen genuinely useful pages about protecting, filing and launching inventions signals expertise.
Pick your subject. Write the cluster. Link the pages to each other with descriptive anchor text.
4. Nobody links to you and nobody mentions you
- Get listed everywhere your business legitimately belongs — directories, associations, partners, suppliers.
- Be a guest on podcasts and blogs your buyers already consume.
- Publish something worth citing: original data, a calculator, a genuinely complete guide.
5. You expected results in three weeks
New sites sit in a credibility gap for months. Typical timelines: 3–6 months for long-tail queries, 6–12 for competitive ones. The sites that win are the ones still publishing in month nine.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take a new website to rank on Google?
Long-tail, low-competition pages can appear within 4–12 weeks of being indexed. Competitive commercial keywords usually take 6–12 months of consistent publishing and link building.
How do I get Google to index my site faster?
Verify in Google Search Console, submit a valid XML sitemap, request indexing for key URLs, link new pages from existing indexed pages, and earn at least a few external links.
Stop researching. Start filing.
