UK inventors email me constantly asking whether they need a London patent attorney before they can even talk about their invention. You do not. The UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO) is one of the cheapest and most inventor-friendly patent offices in the world, and you can start the clock yourself for less than the price of a decent dinner.
I filed in the US, but the mechanics rhyme everywhere: describe the invention properly, get a filing date, then use the next twelve months to prove people want it. Here's the UK version of that playbook.
The UK does not have a 'provisional patent' — it has something better
In the US you file a provisional. In the UK you file a standard patent application without requesting search and examination straight away. That gets you a filing date and 'patent pending' status, and you can defer the search and examination fees.
The practical effect is the same as a US provisional: a priority date, twelve months of breathing room, and the right to say patent pending while you test the market.
What it actually costs at the IPO
So a UK inventor can be legitimately patent pending for £60 and fully filed for a few hundred pounds. Always confirm current fees on gov.uk before you pay — the IPO reviews them.
- Filing an application online: £60 (£90 on paper). File electronically.
- Search request: £150 online, due within 12 months of the filing date.
- Substantive examination: £100 online, generally due within six months of publication.
- Renewal fees start at the fourth year and rise annually.
- A patent attorney to draft and prosecute for you: typically £3,000–£6,000. Optional, not compulsory.
Step by step: filing it yourself
- Search first. Use Espacenet and the IPO's patent database, plus a plain Google image search. If your exact thing exists, better to know now.
- Write the description: the problem, the invention, how it is made, how it works, materials, dimensions, and every variation you can think of.
- Draw it. Numbered line drawings from at least three angles, referenced in the description.
- Draft claims. Claim 1 is the broadest honest statement of the invention; dependent claims narrow it.
- Write an abstract of roughly 150 words.
- File online through the IPO service, pay the £60, and save the filing receipt with your application number.
The 12 months matter more than the paperwork
A filing date is not a business. It is a countdown. Use those twelve months to build a working prototype, get it in front of buyers, collect video of real people using it, and decide whether to pay for search and examination or let it lapse and save your money.
Critically: do not publicly disclose your invention before you file. The UK has no grace period equivalent to the US one-year rule. A market stall demo, a TikTok video or a pub conversation with the wrong person can destroy novelty.
UK, then the world
A UK filing gives you a priority date you can use for twelve months to file in the US, the EU, China or via the PCT. That is why filing cheaply and early at home is such a strong opening move — it reserves your date globally while you find out if the product sells.
Where the Dream Kit System fits
The system is process, not jurisdiction. The Patent Pending in 7 Days guide, the NDA & IP Protection templates and the AI invention coach walk you through describing, drawing and pitching your invention whether you file with the IPO, the USPTO or both. The full system is $99, and the free blueprint is a good place to start.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to patent an idea in the UK?
Filing online costs £60. Adding search and examination brings it to roughly £310 in official fees. Using a patent attorney typically adds £3,000–£6,000.
Can I patent an idea in the UK without a solicitor?
Yes. The IPO accepts self-filed applications and publishes guidance for unrepresented applicants. Many inventors self-file for the priority date, then hire help only if the product proves itself commercially.
How long does a UK patent take to grant?
Typically two to four and a half years from filing to grant. You can say patent pending the day you file.
Does a UK patent protect me in the US or China?
No. Patents are territorial. A UK filing gives you a 12-month priority window to file elsewhere, including via the PCT route.
